Which Publisher should You Choose
- Here is a comparison of the Big Three Publishers Who can join ?
- • ASCAP – anyone (no need to submit music upon joining)
- • BMI – anyone (no need to submit music upon joining)
- • SESAC – artists can join by invitation only, (basically you need a bit of a track record and then you contact someone from SESAC). http://www.sesac.com/WritersPublishers/affiliate.aspx
- Joining Fees:
- • ASCAP – writer $50, publisher $50
- • BMI – writer free, publisher $150 (for individual) $250 (for a partnership)
- • SESAC – no fees
- Payout:
- All three seemingly have fairly equal payout structures although ASCAP’s operating cost are a little less which in theory means more money for the artists. Then again, BMI’s larger size may give it more clout in extracting fees. SESAC, because of it’s small size and selective nature claims to have more personal relationships with their members.
- • ASCAP – 1 year for writer and publisher
- • BMI – 2 years for writer, 5 years for publisher
- • SESAC – 3 years for writer and publisher
- All the organizations offer benefits to their members including insurance, conferences and discounted music services. ASCAP has the most conferences, which are apparently quite cool, but are located in mostly major urban areas.
- To sum it all up, the biggest question is do you want to pay up $50 for ASCAP and know it’s only another $50 for publishing? Or start free with BMI and then pay $150 later if you want publishing? If you can get into SESAC, you might as well go for it. *One thing to mention is ( the PROs do not register music for the purpose of copyright protection). To legally copyright a song in the USA you need to go through the Library of Congress by following this link. There are fees attached, so I suggest you gather all your songs and do a group copyright as you pay the same fee no matter how many songs you choose to copyright. Keep in mind, you do not need to copyright your music to receive performance royalties.

What kind of Compressor should You use ??? Depending on what style of music and instrument you’re running through the compressor, these styles will change the way the compressor works on your audio, so it’s worth it to experiment a bit until you find what the style you like the most.
Let’s talk about some of the most common ones:
FET – Any plug-in that emulates a FET(Field Effect Transistor) is emulating an 1176. The 1176 is perhaps the most famous FET compressor. People like to use them to get punchy drums.
Opto – The LA2A is an optical compressor. It works a little slower and doesn’t react as quickly to your audio. It works well for parallel compression if you don’t want an aggressive attack/release.
VCA – Fast and transparent. The VCA model doesn’t color the sound as much as the other models, so they’re ideal when you want your compression to go unnoticed.
Remember...Do Not Over Use your compressor unless you want to change the sound...Keep your settings under control !!
